Why inches-per-turn matters more than the ratio

Two reels can both say 6.4:1 and retrieve line at noticeably different rates because their spools aren't the same size. Inches-per-turn is what your lure actually feels, so it's the honest way to compare reels and to pick the right tool for a technique — a slow reel to keep a deep crankbait digging, a fast one to burn a lure back and re-cast.

What's the difference between gear ratio and inches-per-turn?

Gear ratio tells you how many times the spool rotates for one turn of the handle — a 6.4:1 reel spins the spool 6.4 times per crank. Inches-per-turn (IPT) is what you actually feel: how much line that translates to. Because the spool is a wheel, IPT equals the gear ratio times pi times the spool's line diameter, so two reels with the same ratio can retrieve line at very different speeds if their spools differ.

How do I measure my spool diameter?

Use the diameter of the line as it sits packed on the spool, not the bare spool. A full low-profile baitcaster spool is usually around 1.2 to 1.4 inches; larger spinning and saltwater reels are wider. As you use line, the diameter shrinks, which is why the same reel retrieves a little less on a half-empty spool than a full one.

Which retrieve speed should I choose?

Match it to the technique. Slower reels (under about 22 IPT) keep deep crankbaits and big swimbaits in the strike zone and give you cranking power. Moderate reels handle most jigs and worms. Fast reels help with flipping, topwater, and picking up slack quickly, and burners (over about 34 IPT) shine with buzzbaits and covering water fast. Many anglers own a slow reel and a fast reel rather than one in the middle.

Is IPT the same on every retrieve?

The figure here is a full-spool number — the fastest the reel will retrieve. As line comes off the spool the effective diameter drops and so does IPT, and a fish pulling drag obviously slows things further. Treat the result as the top-end retrieve rate for comparing reels and matching one to a technique.
